Boosting working memory with green tea

Over the years, the antioxidant properties of green tea have seen it hailed for its many health benefits and now you can add working memory to the things it can boost.

Working memory is a system for temporarily storing and managing the information required to carry out complex cognitive tasks such as learning, reasoning and comprehension.

In this study, healthy male subjects were given a drink containing 3g of green tea extract before being asked to solve working memory tasks.

On another occasion they did similar tasks without the benefit of green tea. It emerged first of all that the subjects did better on the tasks when they had green tea.

Second, MRI scans showed that green tea led to increased connectivity between the parietal lobe and frontal cortex of the brain, hence boosting working memory performance.
