Though most of us know hops as the herb that puts the bi er in beer, it’s been used medicinally for centuries. Traditionally, hops treats nervous disorders, insomnia, and stomach cramps.
And when it comes to using hops for be er sleep, science agrees with tradition: Clinical trials show that the herb, especially when combined with valerian and/or passionflower, shortens the time it takes to nod off and improves sleep quality better than a placebo and as well as some sleeping pills.
TO USE
Take 300 to 600 mg of a hops supplement about 45 minutes before bedtime. Or look for blends that also contain valerian and/or passionflower. Follow label directions.
CAUTION
Since hops could, theoretically, increase estrogen levels, women who’ve had breast cancer should avoid using the herb.
