Take a collagen drink for good skin, does it work?

There is actually no scientific proof that collagen supplements have any effect on overall health and the appearance of your skin, says Dr Rekha Sheth, cosmetic dermatologist and Prevention columnist, Yuva Clinics, Mumbai.

Collagen is a natural protein component and the main building block for cells, tissues and organs. It helps in the skin renewal process and to retain its elasticity, which reduces with age.

Collagen supplements claim to offer a range of benefits, including wrinkle reduction and improving skin elasticity. “However, there is little or no evidence that beauty supplements, pills and drinks do what they claim,” says Sheth.

Collagen is a type of protein which when ingested, is broken down by the digestive system into individual amino acids to be re-combined by cells according to their needs. By and large, there is no evidence that collagen drinks are more effective than dietary protein.
